ABOUT ANCHOR&ARROW

Anchor&Arrow is the musical collaboration of husband and wife, Matt Dashem and Jennifer Henry-Dashem. Their unique sound is an upbeat mix of soul, funk, rock, and jazz: a culmination of many years of their individual musical styles and experience. The pair has been deemed Happy Valley’s FUNked-Up duo: A two person band with a whole lotta sound!

Jenn’s moving voice fused with Matt’s seasoned guitar can be enjoyed by music lovers of all kinds, but especially those fond of having a good time. Jenn and Matt combine their decades of experience and styles into this wildly fun project. They never take themselves too seriously, while packing high energy and a banging good time into their live performances.

The duo is known for putting their own twists on familiar tunes; blending styles and swapping genres with ease and originality. While they cover feel good music from the ‘70s to modern day songs that make you wanna move, their first love is creating their own music. Anchor&Arrow’s all-original EP, Jumble, can be streamed on Spotify and most other streaming platforms.

We’re excited to welcome back to our stage Eric Ian Farmer along with a few friends and collaborators. For this evening’s performance Eric (guitar, vocals) will be performing alongside Pepe Barcellos (guitar, vocals) Naty Martinez (vocals) & Nevaris (congas).  Hailing from Brazil, Pepe has performed with Eric Ian Farmer on stages around Pennsylvania including a captivating performance right here in our listening lounge earlier this year including Naty… the vibes were so good we’re running it back baby! This show will be another unique mashup of the Americas the evening will feature songs in English, Portuguese, and Spanish. 

ABOUT ERIC IAN FARMER

Born in State College, Pennsylvania and raised in North Carolina, Eric Ian Farmer, a Black man with Blackfeet and Cherokee heritage, has returned to his birthplace sharing his songs about relationships, social awareness, and finding one's path in life while keeping alive classics by artists like Marvin Gaye, Otis Redding, and Bill Withers. Eric learned the practice of becoming one with a song from Bonnie Carter and David Williams, singers in the church of his childhood just across the North Carolina state line in Danville, Virginia. A bass in tenor's clothing, Eric also draws inspiration as a singer from popular artists like Bobby McFerrin, Stevie Wonder, and Jimmy Hayes (The Persuasions). And his guitar playing is inspired by the percussive stylings of rock legend Bo Diddley.

Eric has opened or played pre-shows for the Soweto Gospel Choir, Bettye LaVette, Charly Lowry, Luciane Dom, and Rusted Root; performed at Musikfest (Bethlehem PA); and served on the faculty at Folk College (Juniata College, Huntingdon PA).

Eric completed his doctorate in Penn State University's College of Education. You sometimes can find him in classrooms singing songs and talking with young folks about songwriting and issues related to identity.

ABOUT PEPE BARCELLOS

Brazilian guitarist, composer, and music educator Dr. Barcellos is an expert on musical creativity, songwriting, popular music, and arts-based research. He has released two albums of original songs, composed music for film, theatre, dance, and animation, and published and presented music education research in international and national venues. A well-known music educator, he has taught at The British School in Rio for 8 years, at Escola Americana do Rio de Janeiro for 4 years, and at Atlanta International School for 4 years. In 2017, Barcellos spearheaded a captivating flash mob at Southside shopping mall in London, where he rehearsed and conducted 50 children through a groundbreaking performance of “Cidade Maravilhosa,” a classic Brazilian carnival march available here.

In 2015, he was an artist resident at World Heartbeat Music Academy, where he performed with a group of young British musicians at the Speaker’s House in the House of Commons, The All England’s Tennis Club, and at the Brazilian Embassy in London. For the last 20 years, he has traveled the world leading Brazilian music workshops. France, Germany, Sweden, Italy, the United Kingdom, Bermuda, and the USA are some of the places where he has facilitated innovative, interactive workshops, creating fun, memorable experiences for the students.

At Penn State, Dr. Barcellos teaches undergraduate and graduate music education courses, philosophy of music education, and songwriting, among others. His ultimate goal is to provide authentic music experiences to foster students’ musical understanding, sharing his passion and knowledge to support student growth.

ABOUT NATY MARTINEZ

Naty Martinez is a 20-something Venezuelan musician living in State College. She comes from a family of singers and percussionists who have helped her develop her skills as a singer and have shaped her passion for music. After years of trying different genres and performing in many places around the State College area, she has cultivated a style that reflects a mix of traditional Latin music and her love for jazz and R&B.

ABOUT RICK HIRSCH 4

Rick Hirsch is an award-winning saxophonist, composer, arranger and educator and a longtime force on the State College music scene. Locally Rick performs with his small groups, the Zeropoint Big Band and Orchestra Mi Amor. He has also performed with legends Tito Puente, Max Roach, Paquito D’Rivera, Clark Terry, Jeff Coffin, the Temptations and the Four Tops.

Bassist Bob Hart has toured and recorded with Kat Edmondson, Debbie Harry, Van Dyke Parks, and many others. On the local scene he’s a member of the Zeropoint Big Band, Pure Cane Sugar, and is musical director of Orchestra Mi Amor.

Clay Wulbrecht is a pianist whose imagination and chops know no limits. He’s a jazz studies graduate of the prestigious Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University, and has recorded and performed nationwide.

Charlie Heim is a music educator, producer, multi-instrumentalist hailing from State College, PA. He holds a Bachelor of Music degree from Philadelphia’s University of the Arts, where he served on the drum set faculty for over 10 years. He has had the pleasure of performing with world class musicians across four continents, credits on a growing discography of over 80 original albums, and has had his compositions published in print and on screen. ABOUT ELIZABETH WEBB

A local to Centre County, PA, Elizabeth has been performing professionally for over 15 years. Her love of music started as a toddler, and she hasn’t stopped singing since!

Elizabeth made her New York City debut in March 2019, performing at Birdland Theatre in Manhattan, The Triad Theatre in Manhattan, and has returned to Birdland many times since then including as a featured soloist in THE LINEUP: Broadway’s Variety Show!. Her musical partnership with noted jazz pianist John Colianni and his bands has resulted in several recordings of jazz standards and mainstage performances.

During her college years, Elizabeth toured Ireland, England, Austria, Wales, Slovenia, and Italy with the Mansfield University Concert Choir and Mansfieldians Vocal Jazz Group. She also had the honor of studying with Peter Eldridge of The New York Voices and jazz writer and educator Phil Matson.

Besides performing, Elizabeth also has a passion for teaching. In 2023, Elizabeth joined the faculty at Penn State University as an adjunct Vocal Jazz Professor. She also owns a highly sought after private music studio which was established in 2011. It is based in Bellefonte and Snow Shoe, PA - teaching private voice lessons, piano lessons, music theory, and composition. Teaching styles: classical, jazz, music theatre, pop.

Currently, Elizabeth is the head composer of a project that is green- lighted by Netflix for an upcoming documentary, in association with Cross Creek Pictures.

ABOUT CLAY WULBRECHT

Clay was born in Lafayette, Indiana, and had a very musical childhood. At the age of 5, he began playing piano, and embarked on a beautiful journey of discovery in classical music, jazz, and so many other genres of music. He continued with his education at Indiana University's Jacobs School of Music, receiving a Bachelor's degree in Jazz Performance. After a brief stint in California, he relocated to State College, where he has family and has been coming since High School. In addition to music, he has a job in Penn State's Pattee/Paterno library, and likes to read, play soccer, ride his bike, and take long walks on the beach. He hopes you enjoy the show!

ABOUT CHARLIE HEIM

Charlie Heim is a music educator, producer, multi-instrumentalist hailing from State College, PA. He holds a Bachelor of Music degree from Philadelphia’s University of the Arts, where he served on the drum set faculty for over 10 years. He has had the pleasure of performing with world class musicians across four continents, credits on a growing discography of over 80 original albums, and has had his compositions published in print and on screen. Anchor&Arrow is the musical collaboration of husband and wife, Matt Dashem and Jennifer Henry-Dashem. Their unique sound is an upbeat mix of soul, funk, rock, and jazz: a culmination of many years of their individual musical styles and experience. The pair has been deemed Happy Valley’s FUNked-Up duo: A two person band with a whole lotta sound!

Jenn’s moving voice fused with Matt’s seasoned guitar can be enjoyed by music lovers of all kinds, but especially those fond of having a good time. ABOUT MISS MELANIE TRIO

MELANIE MORRISON Born and raised in Pittsburgh, PA, Melanie Morrison (Miss Melanie) has been singing and performing in Central PA for 15 years in various projects. Her first band, Miss Melanie and the Valley Rats, was a powerhouse Blues ensemble. They opened for Jay Leno, B.B. King and Allen Toussaint and released 5 albums. Since then, she has demonstrated her depth and ability in genres ranging from R&B, to Funk, Soul and Jazz with her dynamic vocals, delivered with a strength and passion that is uniquely hers.

ROBERT GARDNER Robert Gardner is a bassist, conductor and composer with experience in a wide variety of musical genres. 

He has served on the faculty of the Penn State School of Music since 2003, where he is an associate professor of music education, specializing in stringed instrument playing and teaching and orchestral conducting. As a bassist, 

Robert has performed with many talented musicians (including Bobby McFerrin, DEVO, and members of WAR), and he has recorded original music in several genres. 

Several of his compositions and arrangements for string orchestra are available through Alfred Publishers. 

Gardner has written chapters and articles in various publications, including Arts Education Policy Review and American String Teacher, and has given presentations at conferences and workshops throughout the country. 

Robert has served in leadership positions for several professional societies, including the American String Teachers Association (ASTA). 

Prior to joining the faculty at Penn State, he taught music in public school districts in Ohio and New York. 

Gardner was also music director for two youth orchestras at the Hochstein School of Music, and has been guest conductor for many honors ensembles around the United States. 

Robert received his bachelor’s degree in music education from the Ohio State University, and his M.A. and Ph.D. in music education from the Eastman School of Music (University of Rochester).

Currently, Robert performs locally with Natasha & The Spy Boys, Miss Melanie and Groove Society, and The Triple A Blues Band.

JT BLUES “JTBlues” is the nom de musicien of John “JT” Thompson, an inimitable fixture in the central Pennsylvania music scene. You may have seen him as the keyboard player in one of the various groups he performs with, or as a soloist, perhaps playing gentle music in the background during dinner, or rocking out as The One-Man Piano Band.

Influenced by great piano players like Dr. John, Ann Rabson, Professor Longhair, and Bill Payne, JT’s style is rooted in the Blues, but his repertoire encompasses much more than that.

He’s released two albums of music, “Chase Away Your Blues” and “This Way That Way,” has been a Jamarama host on the Legendary Blues Cruise, and a
finalist at the International Blues Challenge in Memphis, Tennesseee

Anchor&Arrow is the musical collaboration of husband and wife, Matt Dashem and Jennifer Henry-Dashem. Andy Tolins is an award-winning guitarist, songwriter, and singer. His repertoire includes bluegrass, celtic, blues, rock & roll, and swing. Tolins sings and arranges both his own tunes and traditional fiddle tunes, blues, and other roots-oriented music. He plays guitars, National steel, mandolin, and dobro, and technique has earned him a reputation as a fine soloist. He arranges and produces both his music and that of other musicians as well.

Tolins also leads both the Triple A Blues Band and the Tolins' Bluegrass Revue. Triple A's debut CD,   Highwater, earned Billboard/Musician Magazine's Best Unsigned Band Competition. The quintet is a powerhouse of urban and country blues, featuring Tolins' vocals and steel and electric guitars, accompanied by organ, piano, and wailing harmonica. The band released Pork Chop Money, their second CD, and are working on a new project now.

The Orval legend began almost 1,000 years ago, when a princess accidentally dropped her ring into a spring and a trout returned it. It continues now, with a day to reflect on and enjoy this amazing Trappist ale.

On Orval Day, devotees of Orval Trappist Ale – and some folks who maybe have not tried it yet – convene to celebrate one of the world’s unique and highly-respected beers.

Orval Trappist Ale was the first Brett beer to land on US shores, and has become the favorite beer for many star American brewers. ( “Brett” – brettanomyces – is a yeast variety that adds appetizing, sharp acidity and dryness.) Orval is brewed to exquisite perfection within the walls of Notre Dame d’Orval Monastery in Belgium. It’s delicious when it leaves the brewery, but also evolves in the bottle for five years or more.

We are thrilled to announce the first installment of our Study Hall series. To kick things off we are celebrating the rich heritage of Irish whiskey in honor of St Patrick’s Day!

From pot still to triple distillation, guests will explore the diverse techniques that make Irish whiskey. Delve into the history and craftsmanship behind each and every Bushmills Irish Whiskey expression, all while savoring up to 4 distinct Bushmills Irish whisky selections. The flight will be complimented by a Bushmills welcome cocktail.

This Study Hall will be lead by Alla Spina’s JP Mills and Ryan Rotell from Southern Wine & Spirits.

ABOUT THIS EXPERIENCE

• Ticket/Reservation fee includes welcome cocktail and 3-pour Bushmills Featured Flight.

• Featured Flight - Bushmills Original, Bushmills 10yr Single Malt, Bushmills 12yr Single Malt. Bushmills 16yr Single Malt (16yr is optional add-on purchase).

• Flight will be a guided tutored tasting lead by hosts for the evening.

• Pay-as you-go cocktail menu available for the evening featuring Bushmills.

Event ticket purchases will only be refunded if you notify us at least 48 hours prior to reservation date/time. Saturday, March 7th brings some Central Pennsylvania Alternative Folk music live to our listening lounge here at Alla Spina. We welcome The Scrapplers celebrating the release of their brand new EP.

ABOUT THE SCRAPPLERS

Central Pennsylvania mountain and valley born, THE SCRAPPLERS offer a hot-on-the-plate sound with an old school delivery. The group boasts a front porch lineup featuring Justin Dorsey (upright bass), Vincent Searfoss (banjo), Naomi Anderson (vocals, guitar), and Nate “Quickdraw” Cutshall (vocals, guitar, harmonica). From the hypnotic styles of Appalachian old time fiddle music and Mississippi hill country blues, to the refined melodic moves of baroque and Irish and cool bop, their roots draw from a deep well of wide-ranging tradition to bear a set of songs that feel at once fresh and familiar.
