Over the past decade, singer/songwriters Eric Ian Farmer and Laura Boswell have recorded together and played shared bills at local spots like The Gamble Mill, The Adam's Apple, and Kaarma as well as down in Western North Carolina at White Horse Black Mountain. They are now teaming up at Alla Spina for an intimate evening of primarily original songs -- some performed solo and others as a duo: Laura leading on vocals and guitar/banjo with Eric on cajon, or Eric leading on vocals/guitar with Laura singing harmony.
ABOUT ERIC IAN FARMER
Born in State College, Pennsylvania and raised in North Carolina, Eric Ian Farmer, a Black man with Blackfeet and Cherokee heritage, has returned to his birthplace sharing his songs about relationships, social awareness, and finding one's path in life while keeping alive classics by artists like Marvin Gaye, Otis Redding, and Bill Withers. Eric learned the practice of becoming one with a song from Bonnie Carter and David Williams, singers in the church of his childhood just across the North Carolina state line in Danville, Virginia. A bass in tenor's clothing, Eric also draws inspiration as a singer from popular artists like Bobby McFerrin, Stevie Wonder, and Jimmy Hayes (The Persuasions). And his guitar playing is inspired by the percussive stylings of rock legend Bo Diddley.
Eric has opened or played pre-shows for the Soweto Gospel Choir, Bettye LaVette, Charly Lowry, Luciane Dom, and Rusted Root; performed at Musikfest (Bethlehem PA); and served on the faculty at Folk College (Juniata College, Huntingdon PA).
Eric completed his doctorate in Penn State University's College of Education. You sometimes can find him in classrooms singing songs and talking with young folks about songwriting and issues related to identity.
ABOUT LAURA BOSWELL
Laura exhibits a poetic and technical depth that has garnered comparisons to Joni Mitchell, Norah Jones, and Nick Drake. She writes intimate folk music with classical influence that has been described as meditative, transcendental, and within the "chamber-folk" genre (Asheville's Mountain Xpress). Along with being a singer-songwriter, Laura has a degree in classical guitar performance and studied piano from a young age. She views music as a bridge to human connection and vulnerability, as well as a powerful tool for fostering community. The multi-instrumentalist has self-released three albums, Counting Eyes (2014), Fall Away (2017), and WellSpring (2022) along with two EP's.
From Laura: "Music allows us to be moved and to move others. It penetrates the deep well of history and emotion stored within us and accesses a through-line to others that transcends language. I seek to open this window of vulnerability within others and myself, to recognize vulnerability and connection to one another & our environment as sacred and vital for our survival.”
